Cool Stuff with the Flash Platform - 11/07/2011

Posted on Nov 07, 2011

A lot of great tutorials and projects in this week's update including: a discussion of orientation versus deviceOrientation from Adobe's Tom Kraikit, performance testing blitting versus frame assignment on AIR for iOS by Michel Wacker, a new isometric engine for Flash Player 11 and Starling from Jonathan Dunlap, and an extensive tutorial on encoding live video to H.264/AVC using Flash Player 11 from RealEyes Media - among many other outstanding entries.

Lots of really great tutorials, demos and more again this week. Starling and Stage3D continue to be a hot topic with a number of people doing various hardware and software performance tests. Also, of course, we get details on the beta releases of Flash Player 11.2 and AIR 3.2 on Adobe Labs.

Cool Stuff with the Flash Platform - 10/24/2011

Posted on Oct 24, 2011

An incredibly busy week again this week with a ton of articles and blog posts, especially on the subject of Starling and/or Stage3D for Flash Player 11. It's nice to see that people are excited about the possibilities that these tools create.

On the excitement part, this week I am excited to be attending RIA Unleashed he is Boston (technically Waltham though) which is going to feature a ton of sessions and workshops by some amazing speakers. This was my conference up until this year when I handed the reigns over to the event experts at FITC who appear to have a great show lined up for us. If you are on the East Coast - or in the Northeast especially - you should consider attending as there are still a few tickets for the Friday conference day available.

Cool Stuff with the Flash Platform - 10/12/2011

Posted on Oct 12, 2011

As I noted in my prior update yesterday, this past week, which included MAX of course, had way too much stuff to cover in a single update. Today's update is focused entirely on tutorials, code samples and open source projects from the Flash Platform community - with none of the press coverage or official announcements that I covered yesterday. For those of you with whom I did not get to chat directly at MAX, let me say that there really is just so much great stuff within the Flash community that you guys continue to daily impress me. Keep up the great work!

Cool Stuff with the Flash Platform - Pre-MAX Edition 2011

Posted on Sep 26, 2011

It is hard to believe that MAX is less than one week away. For any of you interested in meeting up with me, I will be attending and TA-ing a number of sessions as well as speaking at the FITC Unconference on Monday afternoon. I know there will be many very exciting announcements coming - though to be honest many are a surprise to even me. Can't wait!

Of course, the big news this week was the Flash Player 11 and AIR 3 announcement that generated tons of buzz and quite a few of the posts in this week's list. It received some notable, and generally very positive, coverage in places like the New York Times, Mashable and GigaOm to name just a few (though, sadly, the NY Times article did reprint the rather widespread misstatement that Windows 8 won't support Flash). Most of the media focus was on the browser-based 3D gaming aspects of Flash Player. However, most of the community focus seemed to be on things like native extensions and captive runtime in AIR 3 - perhaps, in part, because Stage3D/Molehill has been available for some time via the Incubator program. Adobe evangelist Ryan Stewart had a great overview of all the news and announcements in Flash Player 11, AIR 3 and Flex/Flash Builder 4.6.
